Vintage World War II Utility Scheme Dining Chairs

Vintage Utility Scheme dining chairs in a hardwood. These are a four British World War II Utility Scheme dining chairs featuring a ladderback design. Under the guidance of design figures like Gordon Russell, the Utility Furniture Advisory Committee rejected the ornate, heavily decorated styles popular in the 1930s. Instead, they embraced a stripped back, functional modernism heavily inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement. They relied on clean geometric lines, sturdy construction, and minimal curves to optimize timber use during severe raw material shortages.

Condition: Age related wear as to be expected. All the chairs are sturdy though. The seats pads have been replaced at some point but don’t believe they comply with the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988 (as amended in 1989, 1993 and 2010) and would need to be replaced.
